Lecture "Rhetorical and Linguistic Strategies in Argumentation"

The Case of Arabic and English Newspaper Editorials Written discourse has different conventions (i.e., preferences) across cultures and languages. In this lecture some of the findings of a large scale study investigating the argumentation strategies that Arabic and English employ in newspaper editorial will be reviewed. Call for further research and Implications for intercultural communication competence will be made.


Workshop "Arab Communication Style in Oral Discourse"

This workshop is an introduction to understanding the features of Arabs’ communication styles in oral discourse. Some of the features that will be discussed include: the circular communication styles, the high-context style, the solidarity style, the elaborate style, the exaggerated style, and the ‘musayra’ style. Real/authentic discourse samples will be analyzed to explain the specifics of each of these features.


Workshop "Mini Perception Studies on Non-verbal Communication at AUS"

As part of an Intercultural Communication course I teach at AUS, my students and I have been involved in a number of studies on nonverbal communication. In this workshop, I will present some of these studies, explain the methodologies used, report some of their findings, and discuss their limitations. The aim of this workshop is to motivate ‘young’ researchers in replicating some of these studies in different cultures. Another aim is to initiate a discussion on ways to improve the method(s) utilized in these studies for collecting and analyzing the data.


Dr. Ahmad Al-Issa is Associate Professor of English and the Director of the Faculty Development Center at AUS. He holds a PhD from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the field of rhetoric and linguistics. Prior to joining AUS in 1998, he worked at the US State Department’s Office of Language Services, and taught courses in linguistics and communication in the United States, Germany and Jordan. His areas of research include cross-cultural communication, language, culture and identity, global English, interlanguage and intercultural pragmatics, sociolinguistics, classroom research, teaching effectiveness and curriculum development. He has published many articles and book chapters in these areas. He is a member of several international organizations and has presented papers at both national and international conferences in many parts of the world. He is currently part of an international cross-cultural communication project funded by the German Science Foundation.
